How do I set up my kitchen display stations for Owner POS?

Learn how to create and configure Expo and Prep stations (also called KDS stations) in your Owner Dashboard so your kitchen tablets are ready to receive and coordinate orders.

Updated today

⚠️ Before you begin: Kitchen display stations are available for Owner POS customers only. You will need at least one staff tablet per station. Stations are created and managed in your Owner Dashboard.

What are kitchen display stations?

The Owner POS kitchen display system uses two types of stations that work together to coordinate order preparation and handoff:

Expo Station: The command center. Your expeditor uses this station to see all incoming orders, monitor when every item is ready, and notify guests when their order is complete. Every location has one Expo station by default.

Prep Station: A dedicated station for a specific area of your kitchen, like Pizza or Drinks. Each Prep station only shows the items assigned to it, so your kitchen staff stay focused on what they need to make.

ℹ️ If your restaurant only needs one screen in the kitchen with no separate prep areas, you do not need to create a Prep station. Your Expo station alone is enough.

Step 1: Navigate to Stations

1. From your Owner Dashboard, click Settings

2. Select Stations

Step 2: Set up your Expo Station

✅ Your location already has one Expo station created by default. If it is already listed, you can skip to Step 3 to add a Prep station.

1. Click Add station

2. Select Expo as the station type

3. Enter a station name (for example, "Expo" or "Front Counter")

4. Configure your station settings

5. Click Save

Step 3: Set up a Prep Station

Repeat these steps for each prep area in your kitchen (for example, one for Pizza, one for Drinks).

1. Click Add station

2. Select Prep as the station type

3. Enter a station name that describes the prep area (for example, "Pizza Station" or "Drink Station")

4. Configure your station settings

Review all available settings, then pay special attention to the Items section, this is where you configure item routing.

✅ Select only the items this station is responsible for. For example, assign "Pizza" to your Pizza Station and only pizza items will show there. Assign "Drinks" to your Drink Station and only drink items will route there.

⚠️ If you leave all items enabled on every station, your kitchen staff will see every item on every screen, defeating the purpose of separate prep stations.

5. Click Save

Step 4: Sign in to each tablet

Once your stations are saved, sign in to the Owner POS app on each tablet and assign it to the correct station.

1. Open the Owner POS app and enter your location code when prompted

ℹ️ Don't know your location code? See How do I log into the Kitchen App on the Owner tablet? to find it.

2. Select your location

3. Select the station this tablet should be assigned to

ℹ️ Repeat this process on each tablet, selecting the correct station for each one. Each tablet will only display orders and items relevant to the station it is assigned to.

✅ Once your stations are configured and your tablets are signed in, orders will automatically route to the correct screens based on the item settings you configured. Your Expo station will turn green when all Prep stations have finished their items, signaling that the order is ready for handoff to the guest.
