Gift cards overview

Gift cards let your guests pay ahead for a meal at your restaurant. There are two types, digital and physical, and they work the same way once they're sold.

Turn gift cards on or off

When gift cards are on, your website shows a Gift Cards page where guests can buy them. They're on by default.

  1. In your Owner Dashboard, go to Settings › Brand details.

  2. Under Features, turn Gift cards on or off.

Types of gift card

Here's how the two types compare.

Digital

Physical

What it is

A code emailed to the recipient

A plastic card you hand to the guest

Who can offer it

All Owner customers

Owner POS customers only

How it's sold

Guests buy it on your website

You order blank cards from Print Shop, then sell and load them on your POS

To sell each type, see How guests buy a gift card on your website and Sell and load physical gift cards on the Owner POS. To order blank physical cards, see Order print marketing materials from Print Shop.

ℹ️ Note: Digital gift cards come in a set of designs that guests pick from. The designs and their text can't be customized, but guests can add a personal note when they send a card.

Bring existing gift cards to Owner

Owner can import gift cards issued on another platform so guests can use their balances with Owner. To prepare your import, follow these steps.

Request an import

  1. Export your gift cards from your current platform. Include each card number and its current balance in local currency dollars, not cents.

  2. Keep a copy of the export for your records.

  3. Contact Owner Support to arrange the import.

⚠️ After the import, you must stop using those cards on the original platform. Balances do not stay in sync between the two systems.

Owner supports card numbers with 16 to 32 digits and no letters. Cards with other formats need new 16-digit Owner numbers. Guests must contact your restaurant to get their new number.

On Owner POS, staff must type imported card numbers. Imported physical cards cannot be scanned, dipped, or swiped.

Where guests can use a gift card

Gift cards can only be used with Owner. Guests can use them online at checkout, or in person on your Owner tablet or POS. See Charge or redeem a gift card.

You're paid for a gift card when it's bought, not when it's used. See When you get paid for gift card sales.

If you use another POS

When a guest uses a gift card online, the order is created automatically. If your POS is connected to Owner, the order is sent to it as usual.

When you charge a gift card in person on your Owner tablet, no order is created in your other POS. So your sales and inventory there may not match at the end of the day.

The money isn't missing. Gift cards are paid for up front, so you already have the funds. To keep your records accurate, void the order in your POS, or mark it as paid by gift card.

✅ Tip: Ask guests to use gift cards online. It's easier for your staff and keeps your records accurate.
