The Goes Well With section on a menu item is built automatically from real ordering behavior. You can't choose exactly which items appear, and it updates over time as orders come in.
What drives the recommendations
The system suggests the items guests are most likely to add, based mostly on ordering data. Here's what has the biggest impact:
High impact:
Items frequently ordered together
Individual customer order history
Items commonly added to carts together
Medium impact:
Price (the system favors reasonably priced add-ons)
Very low impact:
Upsell categories set in the Dashboard
No impact:
The Upsell Item toggle on individual items. It only drives cart-level upsells, not Goes Well With.
ℹ️ Note: The system prioritizes real ordering patterns over manual settings, so the Upsell Item toggle and upsell categories have little or no effect on Goes Well With.
Mark an item as an Upsell Item
The Upsell Item toggle drives cart-level upsells (the suggestions on the cart and checkout screens), not Goes Well With. To set it:
Click Menu in the left-hand navigation.
Click the Items tab at the top of the page.
Find and click the menu item you want to mark as an upsell.
Scroll down to the Promotion section.
Toggle Upsell Item on.
Click Save.
Good to know
Goes Well With only suggests items that can be added in one click, so items with option groups don't appear.
For cart-level upsells, an item needs an uploaded image to be considered.

Normal behavior:
Recommendations change over time as ordering data builds up.
Items guests frequently order together surface naturally.
Different restaurants see different recommendations based on their own ordering patterns.
What won't happen:
Immediate changes after editing upsell settings.
Manual control over exactly which items appear.

Why isn't my upsell item showing in Goes Well With?
This is expected. The Upsell Item toggle isn't an input to Goes Well With; that section is built from real ordering behavior. The toggle only affects cart-level upsells.
Can I force a specific item to appear?
No. The recommendation engine learns from real ordering patterns and doesn't support manual overrides.
