If your menu syncs from Clover or Otter, you can change how it looks to guests without changing your POS item names or prices. Your changes sit on a layer on top of your POS, so your kitchen always gets your original POS items.
How it works
Your guest menu is built from two layers:
Your POS menu: what you set up in Clover or Otter. Owner.com keeps a copy that refreshes on every menu sync.
Your Owner.com layer: a layer on top that holds your changes and builds your guest menu.
Orders always reach your kitchen as your own POS items, so the kitchen never sees your guest-facing changes.
You can make two kinds of changes:
Overrides change how something that already exists in your POS looks to guests: rename it, rewrite a description, swap a photo, hide it, or reorder it.
Bigger changes (virtual entities) restructure menu items, such as combining sizes or splitting option groups. Owner creates these behind the scenes to better represent POS items to guests and improve conversion. They're handled through various internal tools, so you don't need to know how to create them yourself, but you may see them in your menu.
⚠️ When you override a field, future POS changes to that field won't automatically update on Owner. To pick the POS value back up, click Restore from POS and then re-apply any overrides you still want. There's currently no alert when a POS change conflicts with an existing override.
What you can override
What you can override depends on the type of menu piece:
Menu: reorder its categories. You can also turn special instructions on or off and set channels.
Items: display name, description, photo, visibility, and order (the option groups inside). You can also set Popular, upsell, loyalty points, alcohol, taxable, and channels. Clover only: allergens, dietary tags, and nutrition.
Categories: display name, description, visibility, and order (the items inside). No photo. You can also set hours, upsell categories, and channels.
Option groups: display name and order (the options inside). You can hide optional groups, but not required ones. You can also set channels. Clover only: preselected options.
Options: display name, description, photo, visibility, and order (nested option groups, Clover only). You can also set max quantity, taxable, and alcohol. Clover only: allergens and dietary tags.
ℹ️ Note: This applies only when the POS controls the menu. In the menu editor, POS-controlled items and categories show a "Connected to your POS menu" notice. Exceptions: an Otter location with open-item injection on, or a Clover location with menu sync off, is managed in Owner, so edit it like a normal Owner menu.
Hidden or unavailable?
Hide an item in Owner to keep it off your guest menu until you unhide it. If the POS marks it unavailable, it returns when the POS marks it available again.
Guest-facing name changes do not rename the item on the kitchen ticket. The kitchen receives its original POS name.
What you cannot change in the menu editor
Change POS item or option prices. Update prices in your POS.
Delete POS-synced items or categories. Hide them instead.
Hide a required option group, make it optional, or increase its allowed selections. Change those requirements in your POS.
Permanently change an option group's display style (one choice vs. checkboxes). A sync resets it when it doesn't match the POS's pick limits. Change the limits in your POS instead.
Create combined items or split option groups by hand. These are virtual entities, created only by various internal tools.
Add a brand-new item or option by hand. It has no link to the POS, so orders that include it can fail to reach the kitchen.
In the Owner Dashboard
Apply an override
Click Menu in the left-hand navigation.
Select the tab for what you want to edit: Categories, Items, Option Groups, or Options.
Click the specific category, item, option, or option group.
Find the Override link next to any eligible field (display name, description, photo, and so on).
Enter the new value and click Save.
Your guest-facing menu now shows your override, and your POS stays unchanged.
Example uses:
Fix confusing internal names (for example, "Cinm Tst" to "Cinnamon Toast").
Reorder items to feature best-sellers at the top of a category.
Add clear descriptions written for guests, not kitchen staff.
Remove an override (Restore from POS)
To revert an override back to the original POS value:
Go to the overridden field in the Dashboard.
Click Restore from POS next to that field.
Click Save. The field reverts to whatever the POS currently shows.
Restore an item's option groups
Items and options have one Restore from POS button for all their option groups. Use it to undo option group changes on that item or option. To see your POS order first without changing anything, click View POS Option group order under the option groups list.
Click Menu in the left-hand navigation.
Click the Items or Options tab, then click the item or option.
Click Restore from POS beside Option groups or Nested option groups.
Choose what to restore:
Only reset to POS order: puts the option groups back in your POS order. Everything else you changed stays, including hidden groups, split groups, and groups you added.
Restore all overrides to original POS settings: brings back the POS option groups that were hidden, split, or swapped for a pizza topping group, and removes the groups that replaced them. Groups you added yourself are removed from this item or option only, not deleted. Names, prices, and other settings stay the same.
Click Save Item (or save the option). Nothing changes until you save.
⚠️ A full restore can change other items too. Restore all overrides to original POS settings also updates every item and option that uses the same replacement groups, including on your other menus. The dialog shows how many groups will be restored and removed. Hover over a number to see the group names. If you have unsaved option group changes, restoring discards them.
⚠️ Manually syncing with Otter may erase changes made in Owner. Review the warning before continuing; erased changes cannot be recovered.
Will my change survive the next POS sync?
When you edit your POS menu, here's what happens to your Owner.com changes:
Rename something in your POS: your Owner.com rename still wins. Switch the override off to show the new POS name.
Change a price: the new price shows, because prices can't be overridden.
Add a new item or option: it appears next to its POS neighbor, and your custom order is kept.
Mark something unavailable: it leaves the guest menu until you mark it available again in your POS.
Remove something: on Otter it's deleted; on Clover it's marked unavailable and kept.
Make an option group required: keep it visible so guests can make the pick.
Delete and re-create an item: Owner sees a brand-new item, and overrides on the old one are lost.
Change an option group's options or pick limits: a display style you changed may be reset to match.
Change which option groups an item has: your option group order is kept, and new groups are placed next to their POS neighbors.
Good to know
Overrides have no expiration. You can remove them with Restore from POS.
Changes to an overridden POS field do not update its guest-facing value. Use Restore from POS to show the POS value again.
Orders inject correctly. Overrides change only what guests see, not how orders are sent. Order injection to your POS is unaffected.
Some menu pieces may not exist in your POS. You may see items or option groups in the Dashboard that don't exist in the POS. These are split or combined for guest clarity and are still mapped correctly for order injection. To bring back an item's original POS option groups, see Restore an item's option groups above.
POS menus are per location. If you fix one location, make the same change at your others.
