Gross sales, net sales, and net payout explained

Your reports use a few money terms that sound alike. Knowing what each one means helps you tell what you sold apart from what lands in your bank.

Gross sales

Gross sales is the total of your menu item prices, before any discounts. It doesn't include tax, tips, or fees.

Net sales

Net sales is what's left after discounts, like coupons and loyalty rewards. It doesn't include tax, tips, or fees.

Net sales = Gross sales − Discounts

ℹ️ Note: Sales adjustments show on their own line and aren't part of net sales. An adjustment is an extra charge added to an order, or an item voided or changed on your Owner POS. Refunds, disputes, and chargebacks are not adjustments.

Total collected

Total collected is everything your guests paid. It adds up these amounts:

  • Net sales

  • Sales tax

  • In-house tips

  • Third-party driver tips

  • Guest-paid fees: the Owner fee, processing fee, and delivery fee, when your guest pays them

Net payout

Net payout is the money that actually lands in your bank account. It starts with total collected. Then these come out or go in:

  • Minus refunds and disputes

  • Minus the fees you pay: the Owner fee, processing fee, and delivery fee

  • Minus third-party driver tips, which go to the delivery driver

  • Minus delinquency fees, if you have an unpaid Owner invoice

  • Plus gift card sales, minus gift card redemptions

  • Plus or minus other adjustments, like credits from Owner

ℹ️ Note: Gift card money counts when the gift card is sold, not when a guest uses it. That's why redemptions lower your payout.

Your net payout includes the sales tax your guests paid. Owner doesn't file or pay sales tax for you, so set it aside. To see every deduction on a payout, open your Payouts report.
