How Uber Eats and DoorDash delivery fees work

When you use 3rd-party delivery, Uber Eats and DoorDash set the delivery fee based on distance. Here's how each works, so you can set accurate expectations and configure your zones correctly. The fee shown at checkout for a guest's address is always the final source of truth.

Uber Eats

  • Flat fee: $5.50 for deliveries up to 6 miles.

  • 6 to 8 miles: $0.95 per additional mile.

  • Beyond 8 miles: $1.00 per additional mile.

  • Maximum distance: no hard limit, but we recommend staying under 15 miles. Food quality drops over long distances and the fee gets expensive (a 15-mile delivery runs about $14.40).

  • Recommended in dense cities: we recommend a maximum radius in some dense cities, for example 2 miles in Manhattan. Shorter trips arrive faster and are less likely to fail. See "Create a delivery area (radius, zip, or custom zone)" for the recommended radius by city.

Uber Eats regulatory fees (California, New York City, Seattle)

In these markets, Uber Eats adds a fixed surcharge on top of the flat fee to comply with local regulations. It's passed to the guest, and Owner collects none of it.

DoorDash

  • Flat fee: $7 for deliveries up to 5 miles.

  • Maximum distance: 5 miles. DoorDash does not deliver beyond 5 miles, even for an extra fee.

  • Recommended in dense cities: we recommend a maximum radius in some dense cities, for example 2 miles in Manhattan. Shorter trips arrive faster and are less likely to fail. See "Create a delivery area (radius, zip, or custom zone)" for the recommended radius by city.

⚠️ Do not set DoorDash mileage above 5 miles, or guests will see an error at checkout when they try to place a delivery order.

In these markets, a Regulatory Fee replaces the standard $7 flat fee on all orders:

Delivery time estimate

Neither provider gives an average delivery time, since it depends on traffic, distance, and driver availability. By default, Owner sets the 3rd-party delivery time estimate to 25 minutes.

How the fees are collected

Owner collects the delivery fee and driver tip through Stripe on each order, which the guest sees at checkout. Owner then settles with the provider. For example, DoorDash bills Owner.com monthly for the total of delivery fees and driver tips.

Zone order matters

When a guest's address falls in more than one delivery zone, the first matching zone (top-down) sets the fee and provider. See "Set the order of your delivery zones" for how to order them.
